It isn't easy to live with the fact that, day after day, the hospitality worker's working hours coincide with other people's leisure time. That's why it's so important that you, who work in this sector, take care of yourself and protect your mental health, because it's very difficult -at least logistically- to reach a position of balance between your job and your personal life. Sometimes, in the middle of the whirlwind of routine, you don't think to look for alternatives and, for that reason, we have salvaged three simple practices that you, as hospitality staff, can follow to look after yourself and your quality of life.

1. Be aware of your needs
Irregular schedules and long shifts in hospitality can generate stress and exhaustion. Social balance means recognising your needs and finding ways to meet them within your schedule. Do you need more time to rest? More time to relax? By identifying your needs, you'll be able to make adjustments and find solutions that fit within your rest hours. This can include planning moments of rest, managing your free time more effectively, and taking steps to reduce stress at work.
2. Lean on your loved ones and look for healthy hobbies
Even if your schedule leaves you more disconnected from others, don't stop seeking them out. Try to organise yourself so that, at least once a week, you can see those people who give you an extra boost of energy and help you keep a balance in your life. And sometimes, all you need is to be with others. Other times, on the contrary, you need to let off steam. Aim to stay in shape. You can go to the gym, but your schedule isn't always compatible with that option; that's why a walk or an online class of some sport can also do you a lot of good. Don't feel alone in your search for balance; make sure you have support in your closest network of contacts, and find activities that make you feel good about yourself.
3. Technology can be your ally
Just as we suggested signing up for online classes, you can apply this to other areas of your life. Do you barely make it or arrive late to the supermarket? Do your shopping online. Don't you have time to browse the shops? Buy online. Do you want to train? Sign up for an online academy. Can't you go to the cinema? Subscribe to a streaming platform. Take advantage of Technology to simplify daily tasks and create opportunities for learning and relaxation (and, above all, to close off any fronts that may unnecessarily open up for you).
The most complicated part of all the habits we propose throughout this post is starting to carry them out. To be able to do so, you need to be willing to change your mindset. Any job can pose a challenge to mental health for whatever reasons, but it is in our hands to put a stop to any routine that doesn't add anything to our wellbeing.
